Lady Raiders in Eighth After Tough First Round
April 25, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - It was not quite the kind of start or the kind of conditions the No. 47 Texas Tech women's golf team would have hoped for during Friday's opening round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championships, but Tech fought through rain and wind in Stillwater, Okla. to come in eighth place, just three strokes out of sixth, with a 46-over 334 after the first day of competition. With rain falling and wind gusts reaching nearly 20 miles per hour, competitors found their biggest challenge of the day not to be each other, but to be Mother Nature instead. Despite boasting a field with six top-50 teams and seven top-100 ranked golfers, no team managed to shoot below 300, while the field's leader, Oklahoma State's Jaclyn Sweeney, came in at two-over 74 amidst the partly cloudy, wet and blustery conditions at Karsten Creek Golf Course. Sophomore Rosalyn Kim birdied two holes on the back nine to boost herself to an eight-over 80 for the day and lead the Lady Raiders. The Belton, Texas, product is tied for 13th, just three strokes out of fourth. Junior Ulrika Van Niekerk followed Kim at 12-over 84 to tie for 33rd, while Megan Dowdy and Robyn Scott each carded 13-over 85s for the day to come in tied for 39th. Stephanie Smith rounded off Tech's scoring at 15-over 87 to tie for 44th. The conference's highest ranked team, No. 9 Oklahoma State, leads the competition at 15-over 303, while No. 22 Texas A&M is 12 strokes back in second with a 315. No. 50 Missouri is 14 shots back in third at 317. No. 21Texas (321) is in fourth, while Nebraska (326) and Iowa State (331) round out the top six teams. They are followed by Kansas (333), Tech, No. 41 Oklahoma (335), Kansas State (335), Baylor (344) and Colorado (351).
Tech will look to jump higher in the standings in tomorrow's second round. Action is set to tee off at 9 a.m. CT with live scoring available at www.golfstat.com. 1. Oklahoma State - 303 (+15) |
