Tech Finishes 18th at NCAA West RegionalTUCSON, Ariz. - The Texas Tech University women's golf team saw its 1996-97 season officially end on Saturday with an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Division I Women's West Regional Women's Golf Championships. The top 11 teams out of the 20-squad field and two other individuals out of the 102 players qualified for the NCAA Women's Golf Championships May 21-24 at Ohio State. West Regional champ Arizona State and defending NCAA title holder Arizona will join Stanford, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Oregon, TCU, Tulsa, UCLA, Texas A&M and Washington in the upcoming NCAA tourney. Texas golfer Heather Bowie and SMU's Jennifer Hubbard also qualified as individuals for the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. The Red Raiders, who were aiming at a second-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, shot a three-day total of 918, a 54-over-par mark on the par 72, 6,012-yard Randolph Park North Golf Course. The Red Raiders were playing in their second consecutive NCAA West Regional and fourth in the last five years. Arizona State finished with a 1-over 865 to nip rival Arizona by one shot. Stanford was third at 6-over 870. Washington's Dodie Mazzuca won the individual crown, firing a 5-under 211. She shot 1-under 71 on Saturday, moving up from fourth place to earn the medalist title. Mazzuca also helped her team win the 11th spot with a two-hole sudden death playoff victory over Oklahoma State. Sophomore Brooke Lowrance tied for 32nd with a 7-over 223. Four-year veteran Tamara Parker, wrapped up her career by tying for 64th with teammate Kristin Kight at 14-over 230. Sophomore Beth Covington (236) tied for 88th, while Lubbock freshman Alana Soliz (238) tied for 95th. Next season the Red Raider will return three golfers - Covington, Kight and Lowrance - who played in every tournament this season. Texas Tech is 18th at 36-over-par 612 after two days on the par 72, 6,003-yard Randolph Park North Golf Course. The Red Raiders fired a second-round 309 after a 303 yesterday. Stanford is first at 4-under 572. Arizona State is second one shot back, while Arizona is two shots back in third. San Jose State is fourth at 3-over 579, while New Mexico State is fifth at 10-over 586. After being only three shots off the lead yesterday, sophomore Brooke Lowrance struggled to a 4-over 76. She is tie for 29th, 10 shots off the lead. Stanford's Mhairi McKay is first with a 6-under 138. Arizona's Marisa Baena is second, one shot off the pace. A total of 10 golfers are under par after 36 holes, while six others are even. Meanwhile, Texas Tech senior Tamara Parker is tied for 61st at 9-over 153. Junior Kristin Kight is tied for 70th at 10-over 154. Sophomore Beth Covington is 13-over (157) and tied for 83rd. Freshman Alana Soliz is 97th with 16-over 160. The Cardinal recorded the only sub-par team total of the day, as the Huskies fired a second-place score of 1-over-par 289. Arizona State sits in third place at 2-over-par 290 and New Mexico State is in fourth at 5-over-par 294. San Jose State rounds out the top-five at 6-over-par 294, while defending NCAA champion and host Arizona is tied with Tulsa for sixth place at 7-over-par 295. Individually, San Jose State's Janice Moody and Washington's Dodie Mazzuca are tied for first after firing 3-under-par 69s. Pac-10 champion Mhairi McKay is in third with a 2-under-par 70, followed by a trio of golfers that are tied for fourth. Included in that grouping is ASU's Je'ne-Marie Busuttil, New Mexico's Megan Benn and Tulsa's Filippa Helmersson, all of which fired a 1-under-par 71. Defending NCAA Champion and No. 1 ranked Marisa Baena (Arizona) is among a group of eleven players that are tied for seventh with scores of even-par 72 -- three shots off the pace established by Moody and Mazzuca. The second round of the three-round tourney takes place tomorrow, May 9, with 18 holes of play. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. with players teeing off from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
