A sell-out crowd of over 51,000 packed into Jones Stadium on a beautiful fall afternoon to witness one of the most exciting Southwest Conference games ever played. A Hollywood screen writer couldn't have done it any better. All-America linebacker Zach Thomas stepped in front of a Corey Pullig pass with just 30 seconds left and returned it 23 yards for the winning touchdown as the Red Raiders toppled the No. 8-ranked Aggies 14-7. The win snapped A&M's SWC non-losing streak at 29 straight. It was Dykes' first victory as head coach over a Top 10-ranked team and the school's first since 1986. It had been 17 years since the Red Raiders had beaten such a highly-ranked foe at home. The Raider defense seriously detoured Leeland McElroy's Heisman Trophy hopes by holding the A&M tailback to only 80 yards on 27 carries. He was stopped seven times behind the line of scrimmage. Thomas' interception was the third of the day for the Raiders against Pullig. Linebacker Robert Johnson (5-11) outfought tight end Howard Clay (6-4) for a second-quarter pass to set up Tech's first touchdown a 26-yard pass to freshman Donnie Hart. Marcus Coleman had an outstanding game, racking up 15 tackles, breaking up three passes and forcing a fumble.
