SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State broke open a 1-1 game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to take a 14-3 win over Texas Tech on Saturday evening at Bobcat Field in San Marcos.

The loss drops Texas Tech back to .500 on the season as the Red Raiders stand at 6-6 on the year while Texas State improves to 6-4.

The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first as Laurn Randall reached after being hit by Tech starter Nathan Karns and then scored on a balk.

Sophomore shortstop Chris Hall evened things up for the Red Raiders in the top of the fifth as he delivered his sixth sacrifice fly of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Things fell apart for Tech in the bottom half of the frame as the Bobcats finally chased away Karns and then feasted on reliever Brian Cloud. Cloud entered the game with Tech trailing 3-1 and with one out and the bases loaded. He gave up three consecutive hits in the frame that allowed Texas State to stake an 8-1 lead.

Things went downhill from that point on for the Red Raiders as the Bobcats tacked on four more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 12-1 lead. Jonathan Farrow delivered the crushing blow in the inning with a three-run blast to left field.

Nate Karns (1-1) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he gave up six runs on five hits while walking three batters over 4 1/3 innings. Steven Siers earned the win for Texas State as he allowed just one run and scattered three hits over seven innings.

Texas Tech will look to rebound on Sunday afternoon as the Red Raiders will face Northern Illinois at noon here at Bobcat Field.
